Police: Mother charged after trying to smother child
CHARLOTTE – A woman is accused of trying to suffocate her 1-year-old son at Levine’s Children’s Hospital in Charlotte.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say hospital staff called police Sunday after they noticed changes in 32-year-old Maggie Dixon's baby's vital signs and breathing.
Police say hospital staff also saw Dixon on surveillance video trying to suffocate the infant.
After police arrived, Dixon was taken to police headquarters to speak with detectives. She was arrested a short time later.
Dixon is charged with attempted first degree murder and felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury. At last report, she remained in custody.
The child remains at the hospital.
The Department of Social Services is assisting with the investigation.
